Kinetic damage is more effective against unshielded targets, plasma damage is better against shielded targets, shock damage EMPs vehicles and can stun enemies, and hardlight rounds can ricochet off of surfaces. There are four different damage types in the game: kinetic, plasma, shock, and hardlight. While separate damage types have always been an implied concept in previous Halo games, Halo Infinite makes them official.
